Having had three consecutive losing seasons, the Atlanta Falcons have decided to part ways with their head coach Arthur Smith. After a devastating 48-17 defeat against the New Orleans Saints – which was one of his largest losses as a coach for the team -this decision was made.

Smith, son of FedEx founder Fred Smith and aged 41 at the time, finished his coaching term with a record of 21 wins to 30 losses. He consistently had seven victories paired with ten defeats each year over three seasons. Throughout his six-year leadership tenure for The Falcons, they failed to qualify for playoffs after 2017 and continued enduring successive losing campaigns under him.

Following a series of unsatisfactory matches, which featured losses against the Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints with scores of 37-17 and 48-17, the Falcons were handed their ultimate downfall. The team had been grappling with offensive issues and inconsistent quarterback performance throughout the season, resulting in noteworthy challenges.

After losing to the Saints, Smith met with team owner Arthur Blank and CEO Rich McKay. Just after midnight, it was announced that Blank would be looking for a sixth full-time head coach during his ownership tenure. Despite recognizing Smith’s efforts in fostering a robust team culture, he emphasized that results on-field fell short of expectations.

The year 2021 marked the start of Smith’s leadership tenure within the team. Despite facing challenges with salary cap limitations, he made significant modifications to the roster and instilled a sense of confidence during the 2023 season by investing substantially in free-agent acquisitions and prominent draft picks. Unfortunately, these efforts failed to lead them into playoff eligibility, resulting in Smith being let go from his position.

The instability at the quarterback position, with Desmond Ridder and Taylor Heinicke alternating roles throughout the season, had a considerable impact on the team’s struggles. While Ridder threw two touchdowns in their final game as starter, his critical interceptions ultimately led to their loss against the Falcons.
