Following a series of unsatisfactory matches, which featured losses against the Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints with scores of 37-17 and 48-17, the Falcons were handed their ultimate downfall. The team had been grappling with offensive issues and inconsistent quarterback performance throughout the season, resulting in noteworthy challenges.
After losing to the Saints, Smith met with team owner Arthur Blank and CEO Rich McKay. Just after midnight, it was announced that Blank would be looking for a sixth full-time head coach during his ownership tenure.
