Alabama Mayor Fires 3 Officers Over Fatal Truck Repossession Shooting

In the aftermath of the fatal shooting of Steve Perkins, 39, during an attempt to repossess his truck in Decatur, Alabama mayor, Tab Bowling, announced significant disciplinary actions on Thursday. The incident, which occurred on September 29, led to the termination of three police officers, while a fourth officer was suspended, Mayor Bowling revealed in a press conference.

Video footage captured the tragic event as police officers shouted at Perkins to “get on the ground” before opening fire outside his home. The tow company involved had called the police around 1:30 a.m., reporting an attempt to repossess a truck that led to a confrontation with an individual brandishing a gun. Subsequently, officers and the tow driver went to Perkins’ residence, where he reportedly emerged with a handgun, resulting in one officer firing a weapon.

Mayor Bowling, addressing the media, emphasized the city’s responsibility to move forward and ensure the tragedy is not forgotten or ignored. The terminated officers have the option to appeal the decision, although their identities were not disclosed.

Perkins’ family, represented by spokesperson Brenton Lipscomb, claimed that the security footage suggested an “ambush” in the dark neighborhood, with no visible police cars. They asserted that the truck payments were up to date, questioning the validity of the repossession.

Decatur Police Chief Todd Pinion, who previously stated that police policies were likely violated during the incident, expressed sorrow to the Perkins family. Mayor Bowling stressed that he had carefully considered the officers’ statements during individual determination hearings before making his decision.
