The U.S. Park Police announced on Thursday that they have arrested Benjamin Robertson, a 33-year-old resident of Washington, in connection with a hit-and-run crash that resulted in the death of a pedestrian near the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
The tragic incident occurred on July 12 when Secret Service agents, who were in uniform, attempted to stop a Honda Accord at the intersection of 17th Street NW and Constitution Avenue. The driver of the Accord, later identified as Robertson, evaded the stop and fled the scene. In the process, he struck a 75-year-old man from Philadelphia, who tragically lost his life due to the collision. The intersection where the hit-and-run occurred is located near the National Mall, a prominent area in the city.
According to reports from the Secret Service, they had tried to stop the Honda Accord around 1:30 p.m. as part of routine checks on vehicles with expired registration. Initially, the driver indicated he would comply with the stop, but he suddenly sped off south on 17th Street NW. Ignoring a red light, he struck several individuals in a crosswalk, resulting in the death of Bing Wong. In addition to the fatality, a 13-year-old girl was injured in the incident, though she was treated on the scene for minor abrasions and subsequently released.
