In preparation for the highly anticipated 53rd annual Pride March in New York City, the NYPD is ramping up security measures. The event is projected to attract approximately one million spectators, with 100,000 participants and 60 floats.
While there are currently no specific or credible threats targeting the Pride March, the NYPD has acknowledged the global “elevated threat environment” faced by the LGBTQ community.
A recently obtained document from the NYPD highlights past incidents of mass violence against the gay community, including the tragic shooting at Pulse in Orlando. It also draws attention to extremist groups’ rhetoric that promotes violence against the LGBTQ community, citing a concerning post by the Proud Boys targeting June and Pride Month.
The NYPD is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all attendees, and these security measures are being implemented proactively to safeguard participants and spectators during this significant event.
