A tragic California Wildfire stemming from a family’s gender reveal photo shoot has led to a guilty plea for involuntary manslaughter from the individual responsible for The El Dorado Fire, which ignited during the mentioned event in September 2020 at El Dorado Ranch Park in Yucaipa, Southern California, claimed the life of a firefighter. Refugio Jimenez Jr. and Angelina Jimenez, along with their children, inadvertently triggered the fire when a smoke-generating pyrotechnic device they used for the gender reveal ignited the dry grass.

Efforts to contain the fire proved futile amidst strong winds, ultimately resulting in the death of Charles Morton, a dedicated firefighter with the Big Bear Interagency Hotshot Squad. In the aftermath, Refugio Jimenez Jr. pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and recklessly causing a fire to an inhabited structure, while Angelina Jimenez pleaded guilty to misdemeanors related to property damage. Both were sentenced to probation, community service, and ordered to pay substantial restitution.

District Attorney Jason Anderson expressed condolences to the victims and acknowledged that while the legal resolution doesn’t erase the loss, it holds the responsible parties accountable. The U.S. Forest Service also pursued legal action against the manufacturers and distributors of the faulty pyrotechnic device.

Refugio Jimenez Jr.’s attorney, Mike Scafiddi, emphasized that the couple didn’t intend harm and had conducted research before the event. He clarified that it was a small-scale photo shoot rather than a large gathering, as has been misreported. The incident, which led to extensive damage and injuries, adds to the concerning trend of increasingly destructive wildfires in California fueled by climate change-induced conditions.
