Targeted Hate Posters Spark Outrage

The posters, discovered last week in classrooms and other campus buildings, specifically targeted Jewish community members, according to university officials.

The University of Rochester Police Chief Quchee Collins confirmed the arrest of four unidentified suspects on Tuesday. They face charges of felony criminal mischief.

“I am incredibly satisfied that through a thorough investigation, we were able to identify those who are allegedly responsible and hold them accountable for the deliberate and deplorable actions targeted toward members of our University community, including members of our Jewish population,” Collins said in a statement.

Hate Crime Investigation Underway

While the actions currently fall short of meeting the legal threshold for a hate crime, Collins emphasized that the classification could change pending further state and federal evaluation.

“From the very start of our investigation, DPS investigators collected all of the necessary evidence and made all of the needed inquiries to prompt a proper evaluation of this incident as a hate crime,” Collins added.

Campus Facilities Damaged

The posters caused significant damage across campus, as the adhesive used to put them up left marks on walls, floors, chalkboards, and other surfaces. University facilities teams worked “painstakingly” to remove them.
