Thousands of Reports, Few Leads
The FBI has received over 5,000 tips about drone activity across New Jersey and nearby states since mid-November. Investigators have narrowed those tips down to approximately 100 actionable leads, with federal officials assisting state and local authorities.

“Having closely examined the technical data and tips from concerned citizens, we assess that the sightings to date include a combination of lawful commercial drones, hobbyist drones, and law enforcement drones, as well as manned fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and stars mistakenly reported as drones,” the statement read.

Ongoing Investigations and Surveillance
To ensure safety, federal agencies, including the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security, have deployed infrared cameras and drone detection technology to monitor drone activity in the New Jersey and New York regions, according to law enforcement sources.

Dozens of agencies have been actively investigating, tracking operators, and assessing whether any drones were being flown “illegally or with nefarious intent.” Social media photos and videos of suspected drones are also under scrutiny. However, officials noted that many images depict manned aircraft rather than drones.

A “Sober View” of the Drone Sightings
While the drone activity has caused alarm among residents, federal officials remain confident that the incidents do not pose a significant risk.

“We have yet to identify anything anomalous and do not assess the activity to date to present a national security or public safety risk over the civilian airspace in New Jersey or other states in the northeast,” the statement clarified.

However, officials acknowledged community concerns and emphasized their continued support for state and local agencies.

“That said, we recognize the concern among many communities,” the statement concluded. “We continue to support state and local authorities with advanced detection technology and support of law enforcement.”

The investigation remains ongoing as officials work to address public concerns and monitor drone activity throughout the region.
