A former Minneapolis police officer involved in the death of George Floyd was released from prison on Tuesday, as confirmed by a spokesperson for the Federal Bureau of Prisons to the media.

Thomas Lane, 41, had pleaded guilty in May 2022 to state charges of aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter. In a plea deal, prosecutors agreed to drop the charges of aiding and abetting second-degree unintentional murder.

Lane received a three-year prison sentence for the state charges.

Earlier, in February 2022, Lane and two other former officers were found guilty by a federal jury of violating Floyd’s civil rights by failing to intervene during his fatal arrest in May 2020.

Lane was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison for the federal charges.

He served both sentences concurrently at FCI Englewood in Colorado. His federal sentence expired earlier this year, and his state sentence concluded on Tuesday, as confirmed by a Bureau of Prisons spokesperson.

Lane will now spend the next year under supervised release, according to a spokesperson for the Minnesota Department of Corrections.

Derek Chauvin, the officer who knelt on Floyd’s neck for over nine minutes, leading to his death, was convicted of murder and sentenced to 22 1/2 years in prison.
