LONDON — An American citizen was found dead at the exclusive Ballyfin Demesne Hotel in County Laois, Ireland, police reported. The man, who was in his 60s, was discovered unconscious on the bathroom floor of the hotel’s leisure area on Tuesday evening. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene, according to a statement from Ireland’s national police, Garda Síochána.

Following the incident, Gardaí arrested another American, a man in his 30s, in connection with the death. The individual is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at a Garda station in the Eastern Region. The two men had been traveling together, and authorities stated they are not seeking any other suspects at this time.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed that authorities are investigating “all the circumstances surrounding the death of a man at a hotel in north County Laois on Tuesday evening.” A Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed to oversee the case, and an incident room has been set up at Portlaoise Garda Station. A Family Liaison Officer will also be assigned to support the deceased’s family during the investigation.
