According to police, Natalie Rupnow, who went by Samantha, used a handgun to fatally shoot one teacher and a fellow student before turning the weapon on herself. Rupnow died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound before police arrived on the scene. Authorities confirmed no officers discharged their weapons.

Multiple Victims Injured
In addition to the fatalities, two students sustained life-threatening injuries and remain in critical condition. One teacher and two other students were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

During a press briefing, police stated the incident occurred in “a classroom in a study hall full of students from multiple grade levels.” Authorities have yet to determine a motive for the attack or confirm if the victims were specifically targeted.

911 Call Made by Young Student
Madison Police Chief Barnes revealed that a second-grade student made the 911 call reporting the shooting at 10:57 a.m. “Let that soak in for a minute,” Barnes said. “A second-grade student called 911 to report a shooting at school.”

Family Cooperation
The suspect’s father spoke with police shortly after the incident. “We are trying to determine what he knew or may have not known about what happened today, but again, he lost someone as well,” Barnes explained. Police emphasized the family is fully cooperating and there is no indication they committed a crime.

National and State Leaders Respond
President Joe Biden condemned the shooting as “shocking and unconscionable” in a statement issued Monday evening. Biden urged Congress to act immediately, calling for “commonsense” gun safety reforms, including universal background checks, a national red flag law, and bans on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

“It is unacceptable that we are unable to protect our children from this scourge of gun violence,” Biden said. “We cannot continue to accept it as normal.” He also highlighted his administration’s establishment of the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, while reiterating the need for further action.

Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers also addressed the tragedy, calling it a “gut-wrenching” event.

“There are no words to describe the devastation and heartbreak we feel,” Evers said. “This should never happen, and I will never accept this as a foregone reality or stop working to change it.”

Evers extended his prayers to the families, victims, and the entire Abundant Life school community, mourning lives “senselessly taken.”

The investigation remains active as authorities continue to piece together the events leading up to the shooting.
