DETROIT – The Michigan Court of Appeals has upheld a one-year jail sentence for a young woman who fatally injured her father with a dangerous chemical after he was unable to drive her to a hair appointment.
Megan Imirowicz, now 21, received the sentence in 2023 but was immediately released due to the 17 months she had already spent in custody prior to her trial and sentencing.

Case Background
Imirowicz was convicted of using harmful devices or irritants to cause death in the 2021 incident. Prosecutors said she threw lye, a chemical drain cleaner, on her father, 64-year-old Konrad Imirowicz, while he slept. The attack was allegedly fueled by anger after her father, intoxicated at the time, could not drive her to a pre-birthday hair appointment.
The chemical caused severe burns, leading to complications that included kidney dialysis, a tracheotomy, and the amputation of both legs. Konrad died five months later from his injuries.

Judicial Decision
Sentencing guidelines recommended a minimum term of slightly more than four years in prison. However, Oakland County Judge Victoria Valentine sentenced Imirowicz to a year in jail, citing her age, immaturity, and potential for rehabilitation.

“The trial court provided ample justification for the sentence imposed,” the Michigan Court of Appeals stated in a unanimous 3-0 decision on Tuesday.
While acknowledging the severity of the victim’s injuries, the court noted that this fact alone did not demonstrate an abuse of discretion by the judge.

During sentencing, Imirowicz expressed remorse, stating, “Prosecutors tried to make me look like a monster, but that’s not me and never was.” She described her father as her “best friend.”
