Tesla Initiates Recall of 120,000 Vehicles Due to Concerns of Doors Opening in Crashes

Due to failure in compliance with U.S. government regulations on malfunctioning doors, Tesla has recalled over 120,000 vehicles. In a letter shared on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website, Tesla admitted that these faulty doors may unlock during an accident leading to unlatching and opening of the door which might escalate injury risks.

Tesla has issued a recall for their Model S and X vehicles produced between 2021 to 2023. Tesla claimed that they have not encountered any injuries linked with the problem as of December 14. Despite various attempts at getting comments, no response was received from Tesla.

Tesla recently took to Twitter, previously known as X, to release a statement condemning certain news agencies for allegedly distorting “the character of our safety mechanisms.” The automotive manufacturer substantiated that definitive evidence proves Tesla’s functionalities effectively “conserve lives and thwart injuries.” These remarks are under the leadership of Elon Musk who owns both X and Tesla.

NBC News was informed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) last week that it is still in the process of examining Tesla’s autopilot characteristics. The administration has been keeping a close eye on how efficient Tesla’s solutions are and working with them to guarantee maximum safety measures.

Tesla is poised to release a complimentary OTA software update as part of its remedial measures. Correspondence informing impacted owners of the imminent update is projected to be sent out on February 17, 2024.

Tesla’s recent recall comes days after its announcement of recalling around 2 million American vehicles due to worries regarding the safety of autopilot driver-assistance function. A federal investigation found that some drivers had given up control over their vehicle operation owing to Tesla’s autosteer feature. In February, Tesla also recalled more than 360,000 cars connected with “full self-driving” software as part of an earlier recall action.
