In Michigan, police engaged in a one-hour pursuit with a 12-year-old boy who had taken control of a stolen construction vehicle, causing havoc by colliding with approximately 10 parked vehicles, according to the Ann Arbor Police Department.
The stolen vehicle, a Construction Genie GTH-636 Telehandler, boasting a forklift and weighing a hefty 35,000 pounds, was pilfered from outside Forsythe Middle School. The young perpetrator reportedly accessed the vehicle using a key discovered in the cab.
In a statement, the police emphasized the extreme danger of the situation, noting the potential for severe injuries. They declared the incident an active and ongoing criminal investigation.
The episode unfolded around 6:45 p.m. when authorities responded to the school’s call. They located the boy driving without headlights on, prompting a pursuit with multiple officers deploying emergency lights and sirens. The vehicle, moving at a speed of 15 to 20 mph, weaved through the Georgetown Boulevard neighborhood, colliding with parked vehicles along the way.
Despite the chaos, there were no reported injuries, as highlighted by the police department. A video shared by the Ann Arbor police captured officers cautioning about the forklift’s movements during the chase.
The pursuit concluded around 7:20 p.m. when the child exited the city limits via the M-14 bridge. The Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office took over the chase until the child ceased driving shortly before 8 p.m.
