Lucy Letby, a 33-year-old neonatal nurse, was convicted on Friday for the murder of seven infants and the attempted murder of six others. The trial, which commenced in October in Manchester, northern England, revealed shocking details of Letby’s alleged actions, including poisoning with insulin, physical assaults, injecting air into their bloodstreams and stomachs, and overfeeding with milk.
Prosecutor Nick Johnson presented evidence that Letby, who initially denied the charges, had left a disturbing confession in one of the notes found by police during a search of her Chester residence. The note read, “I don’t deserve to live. I killed them on purpose because I’m not good enough to care for them. I am a horrible evil person … I AM EVIL I DID THIS.”
The court learned that Letby, described as “cold, cruel, and relentless,” attempted to kill some of the children repeatedly. Prosecutors highlighted her “voyeuristic tendencies,” evident in Facebook searches for parents of the targeted infants. They portrayed her as a calculated opportunist who exploited the vulnerabilities of premature and ill children to carry out her acts.
The suspicions arose at the Countess of Chester Hospital in 2015 and 2016 when an unusual number of babies suffered unexpected collapses. An extensive investigation eventually singled out Letby as the common factor during these incidents.
Following her arrest in May 2017, Letby faced multiple accusations related to the deaths before being formally charged in November 2020. Besides the incriminating notes, police discovered nursing handover sheets containing names of children implicated in the trial indictment at her home.
Throughout her 14-day testimony, Letby vehemently denied intentionally harming any infants, asserting that she always strived to provide the best care. Her lawyer, Benjamin Myers, explained the notes as the reflections of a woman grappling with self-doubt and self-blame.
After more than 110 hours of deliberation spread over 22 days, the jury found Letby guilty of seven counts of murder and seven counts of attempted murder in connection with six babies. However, they were unable to reach verdicts on six additional counts of attempted murder involving four infants.
Prosecutors have requested 28 days to decide whether to pursue a retrial on the unresolved counts. Meanwhile, police are reviewing the care of numerous children at the hospital. Dr. Nigel Scawn, the executive medical director of the Countess of Chester Hospital, expressed profound sadness and dismay at Letby’s crimes, extending sympathy to the affected families and pledging a commitment to ongoing learning.
