At least 16 people have fallen ill, with six of them hospitalized, due to the consumption of ground beef contaminated with salmonella, according to a statement from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Tuesday. The outbreak has affected residents in four Northeastern states: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. So far, ground beef is the only common food reported in association with the illnesses.
CDC’s investigation involved people who could recall the details of their meals and where they made their purchases. It was found that those who fell ill had consumed 80% lean ground beef purchased from ShopRite stores located in Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York.
As of now, no recall has been issued, and the authorities are continuing their investigation to pinpoint the exact source of contamination and the distribution of the affected ground beef.
The reported number of cases might not represent the full extent of the outbreak, as many individuals who experience salmonella poisoning might not seek medical care or undergo testing. Thus, the actual number of affected people could be higher, and it is essential to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions if you suspect any related symptoms.
