A harrowing incident occurred at Oregon Hospital, resulting in the tragic death of a security guard who was shot, and the suspect later killed by the police in a nearby community, as reported by authorities.
According to a statement from the Portland Police Bureau, they were alerted to an individual wielding at least one firearm, firing shots inside Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center in Portland. Upon arrival, officers swiftly coordinated with hospital staff to provide medical aid to the injured guard, who was subsequently transferred to another facility. Tragically, despite their efforts, the security guard passed away.
Meanwhile, law enforcement from various agencies diligently traced the suspect’s vehicle to a nearby community called Gresham, situated about 15 miles east of Portland. Upon stopping the vehicle, the officers were compelled to use lethal force, leading to the suspect’s demise. Fortunately, no police officers were injured during the encounter. The identity of the suspect has not been disclosed, and authorities are currently investigating the motive behind the shooting.

The hospital, in a heartbreaking turn of events, identified the deceased security guard as Bobby Smallwood. A statement released by the hospital revealed that another staff member had also been shot during the incident but was reported to be in stable condition. However, this staff member’s identity remains undisclosed. Thankfully, no patients sustained injuries in the unfortunate incident.
During a news briefing at the hospital, Portland Police Bureau Sgt. Kevin Allen expressed that he couldn’t confirm any additional injuries “related to the gunfire” at the hospital.
The initial emergency call from hospital security reported an individual verbally threatening the hospital staff while visiting a patient, which ultimately escalated into the tragic shooting. Witnesses recounted hearing three to four shots fired during the distressing event.
