A disturbing incident occurred on a Detroit playground earlier this month, involving an acid attack on an innocent girl. Authorities have charged a 12-year-old girl in connection with the incident, and she is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday afternoon. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy announced that the girl is facing one count each of assault with intent to cause great bodily harm and felonious assault. The accused was released on a $10,000 bond with a tether last Saturday but has not been identified by officials. Her case will be heard in the Juvenile Referee Department of the court. It remains unknown if the girl’s family has sought legal representation.
Prosecutor Worthy expressed deep concern over the allegations, emphasizing the severe consequences that can result from impulsive and harmful actions. She stated, “This is an extremely troubling set of allegations. Instant horrible decision making can have lifelong effects on others. There is no excuse for this.”
The family of Deaira Summers, the 11-year-old victim of the acid attack, spoke out about the traumatic incident. According to Deaira’s relatives, the attack occurred on July 9 while she and her cousins were playing at Vernor Elementary School. The 12-year-old girl involved in the incident had been engaged in an argument with one of Deaira’s cousins.
Domonique Summers, a family member, expressed the lasting impact on Deaira, saying, “It is going to scar her for life. It was a traumatizing event that took place, and she’s going to remember this the rest of her life.”
According to the family’s GoFundMe page, after the argument, Deaira and her siblings initially left the park. However, when Deaira returned to retrieve her purse, the acid was thrown at her. As a result, she suffered second and third degree burns on her back, arms, and legs. The young girl had to undergo treatment at the burn unit of a hospital for four days.
Deaira herself revealed her injuries, recounting the moment she was attacked. She described how the unknown liquid initially didn’t feel harmful, but within seconds, it began burning through her clothes, causing intense pain and distress.
