Florence Charleston Has Been Discovered After 45 Years

45 years ago, a perplexing case emerged in 1978, but it remained unsolved for decades, leaving the victim nameless. The discovery of a woman’s decaying remains, concealed in a bag in a small Nevada town, captivated investigators. Let us delve into the enigma of Florence Charleston and this unresolved case.

The remains were unearthed in October 1978, precisely in the town of Imlay, nestled approximately two hours north of Reno, Nevada. Alongside the remains, officers also stumbled upon various articles of women’s clothing concealed within the garment bag.

Breaking news arrived on Wednesday, as Nevada State Police announced a breakthrough in DNA testing, leading to the long-awaited identification of the victim. The woman has been identified as Florence Charleston, originally hailing from Cleveland, Ohio. In her late 60s, she had recently relocated to Portland, Oregon before her untimely demise. Astonishingly, her life was tragically extinguished, and her body found buried in a shallow grave located 535 miles (860 km) away from her newly adopted home. Regrettably, the circumstances surrounding her death remain shrouded in mystery.

In a recent press release, law enforcement declared that the investigation into Florence Charleston’s murder is still an active pursuit, as they diligently search for answers. Diane Liggitt, one of Ms Charleston’s few surviving relatives, revealed that her father informed her, when she was approximately 18 years old, that her aunt had embarked on a journey to the Pacific Northwest with a new romantic partner during the early 1970s. The passing years brought no word from Florence Charleston, leaving her family with countless lingering questions. Ms Liggitt often ruminated on her beloved Aunt Dolly, the affectionate nickname bestowed upon Florence in her childhood. She pondered over her aunt’s well-being, her happiness, and her safety. Little did she expect the heart-wrenching revelation that awaited her – her aunt had tragically met her demise.

Ms Liggitt estimated that her aunt would have been around 68 years old at the time of her passing. The autopsy conducted on the remains indicated that they likely belonged to a woman in her middle age. Unfortunately, the cause of death could not be determined due to the advanced state of decomposition.

The case was subsequently registered in the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System, accompanied by a composite sketch representing the woman’s appearance at the time of her demise. According to the entry, the woman was believed to be approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall, with red or auburn hair. Additionally, authorities suspected that she may have been left-handed. The bag containing her remains also contained distinct garments, including a dark-green sweater adorned with a white safety pin, dark-green trousers, and a long-sleeved pink sweater.

In March 2022, authorities joined forces with Othram, a specialized private laboratory renowned for their expertise in forensic genealogy analysis. Through the utilization of DNA extracted from the remains, Othram was able to construct a comprehensive DNA profile for the unidentified woman.

The identification of Florence Charleston, after 45 years of anonymity, marks a significant milestone in this perplexing case. However, the quest for justice and answers regarding her untimely demise continues as investigators work diligently to unravel the secrets surrounding her tragic end.
