Legendary Oscar-Winning Actress Turned Politician Glenda Jackson Passes Away At 87

In a sad turn of events, Glenda Jackson, the acclaimed performer who graced both the silver screen and the political arena, has left us at the age of 87.

According to her agent, Lionel Larner, Jackson peacefully passed away at her London residence after a brief illness. Just prior to her passing, she had finished filming “The Great Escaper,” a project in which she co-starred alongside the iconic Michael Caine.

Born in 1936 in Birkenhead, England, Jackson’s talent flourished at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. She soared to stardom during the 1960s and 70s, becoming one of Britain’s most prominent actresses and earning two Academy Awards for her unforgettable performances in “Women in Love” (1971) and “A Touch of Class” (1974).

In a surprising turn of events, Jackson transitioned into politics and successfully won a seat in Parliament as a member of the Labour Party in 1992. Her political career spanned 23 years, during which she served as a minister for transport in Prime Minister Tony Blair’s inaugural government in 1997.

However, Jackson’s path diverged from Blair’s when it came to the controversial 2003 Iraq invasion. Expressing her deep disappointment, she condemned Blair’s decision to participate in the U.S.-led war without proper authorization from the United Nations. She voiced her concerns, stating that the consequences of this military action would predominantly affect the vulnerable, such as women, children, and the elderly.

After departing from Parliament in 2015, Jackson returned to her first love, acting, and delivered captivating performances that garnered critical acclaim. Notably, she portrayed the titular character in Shakespeare’s “King Lear,” a role that left audiences in awe when it premiered at London’s Old Vic in 2016 and later made its way to Broadway.

In 2019, after a hiatus of 25 years, Jackson made a remarkable comeback to the big screen with her role in “Elizabeth is Missing.” Her outstanding portrayal of a woman grappling with Alzheimer’s disease while trying to solve a mystery earned her a prestigious BAFTA award, solidifying her status as an exceptional talent.
