7 students of Van Nuys Middle School taken to hospital for cannabis overdose

As cannabis legalization has become more widespread in recent months, situations like the one that unfolded at Van Nuys Middle School in Southern California have become more common. On Thursday afternoon, first responders were alerted about reports of students possibly overdosing on marijuana edibles. Fortunately, those affected were only said to be suffering from “mild” symptoms.

There are 7 out of the 10 students were taken to a local hospital where medical professionals assessed how critical the situation was and how much cannabis was consumed. Video footage of the scene, shared on Twitter, showed up to 50 first responders helping to assist the students who had consumed too much cannabis, assumingly by mistake. A statement issued by the Los Angeles Unified school district.

Involved in the statement is their actions to resolve the issue. They mentioned that they requested medical assistance to handle the situation and help the students involved.

There are still no details regarding how the teens obtained the cannabis, or when they consumed it. Considering the mystery still surrounding the event, the fact that there was no Narcan involved was a welcome sight to everyone involved. That’s the case because not far from where this situation unfolded, a 15-years old student died following an overdose. Three others were hospitalized. Reports indicate that those students, at Helen Bernstein High School were victims of taking drugs laced with fentanyl. Since that school is just 20-minutes away from Van Nuys Middle School, the statement from the school stating that Narcan wasn’t involved likely delivered an immense amount of relief to the families involved.
