You should never “jokingly” play with guns, and you would assume a cop would know that best, but that was not the case over the weekend in Florida. A young Florida cop accidentally shoots cop roommate.
According to the New York Post, Brevard County Sheriff’s Deputy Andrew Lawson called 911 early on Dec. 3. He explained to the dispatcher that he accidentally shot his colleague Deputy Austin Walsh, and needed help immediately.
In a Facebook post, Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey said deputy Lawson and Walsh were having a break from playing video games when the tragedy occurred. According to investigators, Lawson said he “jokingly” pointed the gun at his best friend and pulled the trigger, as he thought he had unloaded the firearm.
Apparently not though, as Walsh was struck one time and died at the scene, officials said. At the scene, Deputy Lawson was taken into custody on a no-bond warrant on a manslaughter rap by agents from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, according to Ivey.
In the Facebook video, Sheriff Ivey identified Austin and Andrew as best friends. This incident is tragic and could’ve been avoided.
The sheriff also mentioned more about the victim and revealed how Austin has dreamed about being in the police force ever since 18 years old. He then offers his prayers to Austin and his family.
Officials said that Deputy Lawson was deeply “distraught” at the shooting scene and cooperated with the responding officials.
