9 Dead, 1 Injured in Canal Crash in Florida

Nine people lost their lives, and one person was injured after a vehicle plunged into a canal in Palm Beach County, Florida, on Monday evening, according to authorities.

At around 7:30 p.m., emergency calls reported a car in a canal on Southwest Conners Highway near Belle Glade, Florida, said Palm Beach County Fire Rescue Capt. Tom Reyes in a media statement. Upon arrival, responders discovered a vehicle overturned with only its wheels visible, Reyes added.

“A tragic accident occurred last night in Belle Glade at the 5800 Block of Hatton Highway, resulting in multiple fatalities. Fire Rescue confirmed that four victims were pronounced dead at the scene, and six were transported to a local hospital where five additional victims succumbed to their injuries,” stated the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office. “One survivor remains, making a total of 10 victims, including babies. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families during this heartbreaking incident.”

Fire rescue teams, including divers, and the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene, officials said.

The investigation has been handed over to the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office, who will determine the cause of the crash, Reyes noted. The investigation by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office is ongoing.
