Wild video shows robbers using sledgehammer to rob NYC store

Footage from a surveillance video has been released, as it shows a sledgehammer-wielding robber smashing the front window of a Bronx jewelry store, taking about $20,000 worth of chains and pendants before heading out, officials said.

In the video, you can hear screams coming from inside M & NP Jewelers on White Plains Road in the Bronx. The smash and grab took place around 4 p.m. on May 1, the New York Post reported. You can see the robber smashing in the front window, as then a roll-down gate comes down and nearly takes out the culprit.

According to a witness, there were three unknown individuals that used a sledgehammer to break the store window and then they removed assorted jewelry, police said. In the video, you can see the one robber who had the sledgehammer shoving jewels into a bag held by a second man. However, you can’t see what the third man was doing.

Police did say that the chains and pendants that were stolen were worth about $20,000. There were no threats or injuries reported from the incident, as the robbers took off south on White Plains Road in a black BMW, officials said.

It all sounds creepily familiar to the police, as they had another smash and grab take place about 2 ½ miles away in the Bronx back in April. For that incident, a group of thieves stole about $50,000 worth of jewelry that was caught on video by the store, the New York Post also reported.

For that smash and grab, five men were seen exiting a black sedan and then approached M&N Gold Jewelry around 3:45 pm on April 3. One of the robbers smashed the front window of the store with a large hammer, surveillance footage showed. The men then removed about $50,000 worth of jewelry, police said.

The robbers then returned to the same black sedan they got out of and fled the scene. Cops have not said if it is the same men in both incidents, but both used a black sedan for the getaway car.
