Columbus Blue Jackets star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew tragically lost their lives Thursday night in a cycling accident. They were struck by a driver suspected of being intoxicated, according to New Jersey State Police.

In a statement, the Columbus Blue Jackets expressed their profound sorrow: “The Columbus Blue Jackets are shocked and devastated by this unimaginable tragedy. Johnny was not only a remarkable hockey player but also a devoted husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”

Johnny Gaudreau, 31, and Matthew Gaudreau, 29, were cycling in Salem County when they were hit from behind by a driver attempting to overtake another vehicle. According to police, the driver, 43-year-old Sean Higgins, had been trying to pass a slower-moving sedan and SUV. As Higgins maneuvered to re-enter the northbound lane, he collided with the brothers. Higgins allegedly attempted to pass the SUV on the right, resulting in the accident.

Higgins reportedly told police he had consumed 5 or 6 beers before the crash and failed a field sobriety test. He admitted that his drinking contributed to his reckless driving behavior. Higgins faces charges of two counts of death by auto.

Johnny Gaudreau is survived by his wife and two children, while Matthew leaves behind his pregnant wife. Both brothers also leave their parents and two sisters. Their tragic deaths occurred just before their sister Katie’s wedding, according to their former coaches.

Johnny Gaudreau, known for his joyful play and remarkable talent, won the Hobey Baker Award in 2014 and was a finalist for the Calder Trophy. He played nine seasons with the Calgary Flames before joining the Blue Jackets for the 2022-23 season. Last season, he recorded 12 goals and 48 assists.

The Blue Jackets reflected on Johnny’s impact: “Johnny played the game with great joy, which was felt by everyone who saw him on the ice. He brought a genuine love for hockey everywhere he played, thrilling fans in a way only Johnny Hockey could. His impact on our organization and sport was profound, but even more so on everyone who knew him.”

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman added, “Johnny’s infectious spirit and dazzling skills earned him the nickname ‘Johnny Hockey,’ but he was much more than a talented player; he was a devoted father, beloved husband, son, brother, and teammate.”

The Gaudreau brothers also made a significant impact at Boston College, where they were remembered fondly by coaches and peers. Coach Greg Brown described their loss as “shocking” and “almost unimaginable,” while retired coach Jerry York praised their respect and presence.

Before Boston College, the brothers played hockey at Gloucester Catholic High School in New Jersey, where Matthew later returned as a coach. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy extended his condolences, stating, “To every member of the Gaudreau family, please know that the people of New Jersey grieve with you.”

Gloucester Catholic High School Principal Thomas Iacovone Jr. said, “Johnny and Matt were incredible hockey players and students, but even more amazing human beings. Their loss will be felt forever by the entire Gloucester Catholic community and by me personally.”

The brothers’ uncle shared a heartfelt statement: “Last night we lost two husbands, two fathers, two sons, two brothers, two sons and brothers-in-law, two uncles, two nephews, two cousins, two family members, two teammates, two friends—truly two amazing humans.”

The driver made an initial court appearance via Zoom on Friday, acknowledging the charges and indicating he would hire his own attorney. His detention hearing is scheduled for September 5.
