Tesla is initiating a recall of approximately 200,000 vehicles in the United States due to issues with the backup camera not operating correctly when the vehicle is in reverse gear. This recall affects specific Model Y, S, and X vehicles from the 2023 model year, all of which are equipped with the “Full Self-Driving” Computer 4.0 and are running software versions ranging from 2023.44.30 to 2023.44.30.6 or 2023.44.100.
According to the documents released by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there is a risk that the backup camera image may not display due to software instability when these Tesla models are reversing. This malfunction could potentially increase the likelihood of a collision.
Tesla, in its documentation, has stated that there are no known incidents of crashes or injuries resulting from this issue. The company has addressed the problem through an over-the-air software update.
Tesla will start sending out notification letters to vehicle owners from March 22.
Furthermore, the company has confirmed in its filings that it is not aware of any accidents, injuries, or fatalities associated with this defect.
Complaints about this backup camera issue started surfacing in late December, leading Tesla to decide on a recall by January 12. As per the latest information available up to January 22, there have been 81 warranty claims that may be related to this issue.
