A shocking incident unfolded in a Las Vegas courtroom when Delone Redden, assaulted District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus during a sentencing hearing. According to a police report, Redden, who was about to be sentenced for attempted battery with substantial bodily harm, suddenly charged at Judge Holthus, slamming her against a wall.
Surveillance footage captured Redden leaping over the bench in an aggressive manner and initiating a physical altercation with court officials. During the chaos, three individuals sustained injuries. Judge Holthus was pushed so forcefully that she struck her head against the wall, and had some of her hair pulled out.
Following the assault, Redden expressed to a court marshal that he believed Judge Holthus was biased and malevolent towards him. He also apologized for the disturbance caused, stating, “I’m sorry you guys had to see that.”
Judge Holthus, who bravely returned to court the next day, sought medical attention after experiencing pain from the attack. She described Redden as a “big, strong, and angry” individual.
The violent episode also resulted in injuries to others in the courtroom. Court Marshal Shane Brandon, who attempted to intervene, injured himself in the process, dislocating his shoulder and sustaining a facial laceration requiring 25 stitches. Additionally, a corrections officer was punched by Redden, and Holthus’ law clerk, Michael Lasso, sustained several cuts on his hand.
Redden was eventually subdued and taken into custody. During a subsequent search, he admitted to having a bad day and intended on killing the judge.
