Homeowners in Southern California Blur Properties on Google Maps to Deter Burglars

Some Southern California homeowners are taking steps to deter potential burglaries by blurring their homes on Google Maps, according to Ryan Railsback, an officer with the Riverside Police Department.

Railsback explained that this tactic could help reduce the chances of a break-in by preventing criminals from obtaining useful information about a home’s valuables and security measures.

“Criminals are always finding new ways to target people,” Railsback said. “It’s important for the public to be aware and take precautions to counter these tactics.”

In response to inquiries from Media, a Google spokesperson confirmed that users have the option to blur their homes if they choose.

“Street View allows people to explore the world virtually, and we offer a simple process for anyone who prefers to blur their home,” the spokesperson said. “Just click on the ‘Report a problem’ button and submit a request. Additionally, we use advanced technology to automatically blur identifiable faces and license plates to protect user privacy.”

Why are some people blurring their homes on Google Maps? The concept of blurring a home on Google Maps as a safety measure has been around for years, explained Christopher Herrmann, a professor of law and police science at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. This straightforward digital solution could deter thieves from targeting a specific home, he said.

“Potential burglars often scout locations before attempting a break-in,” Herrmann said.

When criminals search for online images of a home, they look for valuable items to steal and any security features that could impede them, such as a home’s layout, entrances, and the presence of security cameras or surveillance systems.

Blurring a home on Google Maps might prevent theft by hiding such details. However, Herrmann cautioned that it could also raise suspicion, as thieves might assume a blurred property has something valuable or vulnerable that the owner wants to conceal.

“It could be seen as a red flag,” Herrmann noted.

That said, home burglaries are quite rare. In 2019, less than 1% of households experienced a burglary, according to the Department of Justice.

“Is your house likely to be targeted by burglars?” Herrmann asked. “Probably not.”

How can you blur your home on Google Maps? To blur your home on Google Maps, go to Street View mode at your address on the website. This option is not available on the mobile app.

In the top-left corner of the screen, you’ll find a drop-down menu. Select the “Report a Problem” option. You will be guided through a questionnaire that allows you to specify which part of the Street View image you’d like to blur and why.

After submitting the questionnaire, Google Maps may contact you for further details.
