Investigation Points to Speed as a Factor
Piedmont Police Chief Jeremy Bowers stated that preliminary evidence suggests speed was a likely factor in the single-vehicle collision. However, authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The occupants of the Cybertruck were reportedly returning from a “function,” though Bowers declined to provide further details. A bystander from the same event, traveling in a separate car, managed to pull the lone survivor from the burning vehicle.
The identities of the victims have not been disclosed to respect the privacy of their families.

Fire Quickly Extinguished
Responding officers were unable to extinguish the flames using their fire extinguishers, but Piedmont firefighters arrived promptly and managed to put out the fire.
Piedmont Fire Chief Dave Brannigan noted that the quick response indicated the Cybertruck’s lithium-ion battery likely did not ignite. He described the incident as “more along the lines of a typical car fire.”

No Evidence of Mechanical Defects
Addressing concerns about recent recalls of the Tesla Cybertruck, Chief Bowers confirmed that there was “no indication that mechanical defects were the primary cause for the collision.”
The Tesla Cybertruck, on the market for about a year, has been subject to six recalls, including one earlier this month for a fault in the electric inverter that could cause power loss to the drive wheels.
