Hyannis, Massachusetts – A 31-year-old Massachusetts man has been taken into custody following a “random and unprovoked” stabbing attack on a teenage girl at a Dollar Tree store in Hyannis, Massachusetts. The incident occurred on Thursday around 12:38 p.m. when Barnstable Police Department officers were dispatched to the store in response to a reported stabbing.

According to eyewitness accounts, the suspect, identified as Nikolas Rescigno of Hyannis, approached the teenage girl from behind in the store’s foyer. While the girl was standing with her mother, Rescigno allegedly stabbed her in the lower back without warning. Authorities report that Rescigno is unknown to the victim, making this attack appear to be entirely random and unprovoked.
“Rescigno stayed on scene in the foyer staring at the victim and eventually dropped the knife upon request from a bystander,” the Barnstable Police Department said in a statement.

Arrest and Victim’s Condition
Barnstable police officers arrived at the scene and were able to take Rescigno into custody without further incident. The teenage victim was transported to a nearby hospital by Barnstable Fire Department Rescue personnel. She is currently being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Charges Against the Suspect
Rescigno faces charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury. Additionally, he had an outstanding warrant for failing to appear in court for a previous incident involving a knife at Cape Cod Mall in May 2023.
