Two Missouri Poll Workers Die in Flash Flooding on Election Day

WRIGHT COUNTY, Mo. – Two poll workers tragically drowned early election day morning when their vehicle was swept off a highway by floodwaters amid extreme flooding in Wright County, Missouri, officials reported.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said the incident occurred around 4:30 a.m. local time, when a man and woman were driving near Beaver Creek and their vehicle was overtaken by swift floodwaters. Both individuals, a 70-year-old man and a 73-year-old woman from Manes, Missouri, were later found deceased at approximately 8:45 a.m.

According to the Wright County Clerk’s Office, the couple were on their way to work at the polls, dedicating their time to assist with the county’s election.

“This is a terrible loss for Wright County,” said Wright County Clerk Loni Pedersen in a statement. “This couple were wonderful people who donated their time to serve their community. We will miss them dearly and the service they provided to my office.”

For privacy reasons, the names of the deceased have not been released, the clerk’s office noted.

Additional Vehicles Caught in Floodwaters

Authorities reported that two other vehicles were also swept off roads near Beaver Creek. Three individuals from those vehicles managed to escape by swimming to shore, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The incident serves as a somber reminder of the dangers posed by flash floods, particularly during severe weather.
