The incident occurred around 12:09 p.m. on Monday, when officers from the Lawrence Township Police Department responded to a call on the 100 block of Eldridge Avenue. The report indicated that a tree had fallen on the young boy, the police department said in a statement released early Tuesday morning.

First responders acted swiftly, freeing the boy from beneath the fallen tree and administering CPR at the scene. Despite their efforts, the child was transported to Capital Health System – Regional Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Investigators have since determined that the boy was playing outside with a friend when strong gusty winds caused the tree to fall, striking him and resulting in fatal injuries.

In response to the tragedy, the Lawrence Township School District announced they would provide grief counselors to support students and staff in coping with the loss.

Therapy dogs and members of the Mercer County Traumatic Loss Coalition will also be on hand at the school to provide additional emotional support,” police said in a statement.

The investigation into the accident remains active and ongoing, as authorities work to piece together the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
