Man Drowns After Saving Children from River Current

A 39-year-old man tragically drowned after rescuing two children from the Delaware River in Bushkill, Pennsylvania, officials reported.

The incident unfolded on Monday afternoon when authorities received a call around 1:45 p.m. about a possible drowning in the Delaware River, according to the National Park Service.

Rescue teams arrived promptly but were unable to locate the man until 3:07 p.m., when his body was found about 20 to 30 feet from the shore in approximately 7 feet of water, officials said.

Witnesses reported that the man was swimming with his family when two children began struggling in the current. He managed to get the children to safety but was overwhelmed by the current himself, according to the National Park Service.

The response involved rangers and dive teams from the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River, and rescue units from Bushkill, Dingmans, and Westfall Fire Departments, along with Lehman Township EMS. They all responded to the call from Pike County Dispatch regarding the drowning.
