Spelman College, an esteemed historically Black and women’s liberal arts institution in Atlanta, recently declared the reception of a groundbreaking $100 million donation. This contribution marks the largest single gift ever bestowed upon a Historically Black College or University (HBCU).
The significant financial boost was provided by Ronda Stryker, a dedicated businesswoman and philanthropist, along with her spouse, William Johnston, who is the chairman of Greenleaf Trust. Stryker, a trustee at Spelman since 1997, is known for her commitment to enhancing opportunities for women in higher education and supporting underrepresented communities, as highlighted in a press statement.
The college detailed that a substantial portion of the donation, $75 million, is allocated for creating endowed scholarships aimed at assisting future students. The remaining $25 million is designated for various initiatives, including establishing an academic emphasis on public policy and democracy, upgrading student housing, and addressing other urgent strategic needs, as per the press release.
This monumental contribution coincides with Spelman College’s centennial celebration of its renaming in 1924. The college, which ranks at the top among HBCUs according to U.S. News World & Report, was initially founded in 1881 as the Atlanta Baptist Female Seminary. It forms part of the Atlanta University Center Consortium (AUCC), the largest global grouping of African American private higher education institutions, which includes Spelman College, Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, and Morehouse School of Medicine, all located in close proximity in Atlanta.
Spelman, with a mission dedicated to fostering academic excellence in the liberal arts and sciences, as well as promoting the intellectual, creative, ethical, and leadership growth of its students, boasts a diverse student body. Over 2,100 students from 43 states and 10 countries make up its population.
