Oscar Pistorius Released from Prison on Parole

After serving almost 11 years for the murder of his girlfriend, Oscar Pistorius – a former Olympic sprinter who was previously on parole – has been released from prison in South Africa.

Oscar Pistorius, the shamed Olympic runner who caused his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp’s heartbreaking murder on Valentine’s Day 11 years ago, was discharged from Atteridgeville Correctional Center in Pretoria South Africa last Friday after receiving parole. Nonetheless, he will be monitored and must obtain official consent to engage in daily routines.

On January 5, 2024, the South African Department of Correctional Services affirmed that Pistorius had been granted parole. Per their declaration, he is currently under Community Corrections and resides at home. Nevertheless, precise information regarding the conditions of his release remains undisclosed to date.

Pistorius has been incarcerated since the end of 2014 after shooting and killing Reeva Steenkamp. He claimed it was in self-defense, believing she was an intruder in his bathroom at his home in Pretoria. However, prosecutors argued that it happened during a heated argument late at night, which turned violent.

June Steenkamp shared her enduring sorrow and stressed that nothing could bring back Reeva Steenkamp, her daughter. Pistorius is required to participate in anger management classes as well as programs aimed at addressing gender-based violence if he wishes to reclaim his freedom.
