An incident of vandalism and burglary occurred at a nail salon owned by an Asian family in Salt Lake City last week, prompting an investigation into a potential hate crime, according to authorities. The perpetrators smashed doors and spray-painted an Anti-Chinese racist message, with the phrase “f— China” painted on salon furniture. The damage, estimated at $15,000, includes destruction to the front door, nail polish racks, and various salon equipment. At present, the suspect remains at large.
The targeted salon, WaterCreek Nails and Spa, has been owned by Sabrina Nguyen’s parents, who immigrated from Vietnam, for the past decade. Sabrina Nguyen revealed that she had to explain the concept of a hate crime to her mother in the aftermath of the burglary. The incident has been a difficult realization for her family, as they grapple with the understanding that they may be targeted due to their ethnicity.
The unidentified male suspect vandalized the salon by shattering its front door with a rock, disabling security cameras, stealing money from the register, and causing additional damage by tearing a sink from the wall. A passerby reported the incident to the police around 3 a.m. after witnessing the suspect leaving the scene with two others. Currently, law enforcement lacks sufficient details to provide an accurate description of the individuals involved.

Nguyen shared her experience on social media, posting images of the vandalism on Instagram. The post garnered significant attention, with thousands of likes and comments from individuals sharing similar accounts of hate crimes. Nguyen emphasized the importance of raising awareness about such incidents and encouraging victims to seek support, noting that fear of retaliation often leads to underreporting.
