Police fatally shoot man from popular ‘S-Town’ podcast during standoff

A man prominently featured in the acclaimed podcast “S-Town,” which delved into the events of a rural Alabama community, was fatally shot by police during a weekend standoff in the town, as announced by authorities on Monday.

Joseph Tyler Goodson, 32, hailing from Woodstock, met his demise when officers shot him after he barricaded himself within a residence and reportedly “brandished a gun” at law enforcement early Sunday, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

The agency’s official statement revealed that the Woodstock Police Department had initially responded to a “call for service” early on Sunday, initiating the standoff. Multiple law enforcement agencies swiftly converged on the scene, leading to the fatal confrontation where Goodson was shot and subsequently pronounced dead.

The agency refrained from detailing the circumstances that prompted the initial call to Goodson’s residence.

A concerning message posted on Goodson’s Facebook account early Sunday read, “Police bout to shoot me down in my own yard.”

The state agency is currently undertaking a review of the shooting and plans to submit its findings to the Bibb County district attorney.

The podcast “S-Town,” recognized with a Peabody Award in 2017, unfolded the narrative of John B. McLemore, an Alabama man who tragically took his own life before the podcast’s release. The podcast’s title, derived from McLemore’s expletive-laden description of his hometown, explored a purported killing and another death, ultimately zeroing in on McLemore—an eccentric antique clock restorer—and his complex relationship with Woodstock. Joseph Tyler Goodson, among several others in McLemore’s life, was featured prominently.

Reflecting on McLemore, Goodson stated in the podcast’s third episode, “Because you know, I ain’t ever had no daddy worth a damn. He’s just about the only daddy I’ve got.”
