Two Nevada state troopers lost their lives in a tragic hit-and-run on a Las Vegas freeway as they assisted a driver in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Stopping to check on a driver asleep at the wheel on Interstate 15 around 3:30 a.m., the troopers were struck by a white Chevrolet HHR, which fled the scene, according to Las Vegas police spokesperson Branden Clarkson.
One trooper was pronounced dead at a hospital, and the other succumbed to injuries at the scene. The victims, described as husbands with children, have not been identified.
In a midday news conference, Las Vegas Police Undersheriff Andrew Walsh confirmed the arrest of a suspect, Jemarcus Williams, 46, who was taken into custody hours after the incident. The white Chevy was found unoccupied at an apartment complex around 8 a.m.
Williams faces charges including reckless driving resulting in death, driving under the influence resulting in death, and duty to stop at the scene of an accident involving death. It remains unclear if he has retained legal representation.
Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson expressed sorrow over the tragedy, emphasizing the need for community support for the Nevada State Police during this difficult time.
