Handcuffed 12-Year-Old by Police Sparks Outrage and Trauma in Lansing, Michigan

A 12-year-old boy, who was mistakenly handcuffed and detained by the police in Lansing, Michigan, spoke out about the distressing incident in an exclusive interview with “Good Morning America.” The family’s attorney, Rico Neal, described it as a deeply traumatic experience.

Tashawn Bernard recounted the event during the interview, expressing his shock and fear at the situation. His father, Michael Bernard, had asked him to take out the trash to the dumpster at their apartment complex. However, a short while later, upon realizing Tashawn hadn’t returned, Michael saw his son surrounded by police officers. Alarmed, he rushed downstairs and confronted the officers, asking why his son was in handcuffs.

The incident was captured on video and quickly gained attention on social media platforms. Though Tashawn was released shortly after being detained, the video clearly displayed his shaken state.

According to a statement from the Lansing Police Department, officers were investigating a series of Kia thefts, one of which occurred on W. Jolly Road. A witness had described the suspect as wearing neon-colored shorts and a white shirt. While one officer pursued a person matching this description, another officer encountered Tashawn, who was wearing a similar outfit. After clarification, it was established that Tashawn was not the suspect they were seeking, and he was subsequently released.

Lansing Police Department Chief Ellery Sosebee issued an apology, acknowledging the incident as unfortunate and confirming that the officer involved had conducted a respectful and professional investigation. Mayor Andy Schor also expressed regret, acknowledging the mistake made by the police and offering his apologies to those affected.

Handcuffing

The Bernard family, represented by attorney Rico Neal, is considering various options, including the potential for legal action. The family seeks justice for Tashawn and hopes to address the lasting impact of this traumatic event. Despite the apologies from the police department and city officials, Tashawn’s family remains deeply affected by the incident.
