In a devastating incident at Lake Lanier, a 24-year-old man lost his life due to electrocution after leaping off a dock on Thursday. According to information from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, a neighbor nearby acted promptly and managed to retrieve the man from the water. The victim was rushed to Northside Forsyth Hospital, but despite efforts, he tragically succumbed to his injuries.
Identified as Thomas Milner by the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, the young man encountered the fatal mishap when neighbors attempted to help him by bringing a boat to the scene. One individual courageously jumped into the water to render aid but was met with a distressing sensation of electrical shock. Recognizing the danger, this person swam back to the shore, disabling the power source, before reentering the water to assist Milner.
The incident highlights the peril of electric shock drowning, a phenomenon where electrical current seeps into the water, incapacitating swimmers. The Electric Shock Drowning Prevention Association, dedicated to raising awareness and educating the public about such risks, explains that this hidden danger poses serious threats to individuals enjoying water activities.
