A remarkable incident unfolded in Eden Prairie, where two motorcycle salesmen are receiving well-deserved recognition for their heroic intervention that potentially saved a customer’s life. Ryan Degroote and Dave Grimme, employed at Simply Ride in Eden Prairie, acted swiftly and insisted that a customer wear a helmet just moments before he experienced a devastating crash.
Last month, Degroote and Grimme sold a bike to the gentleman who had previously ordered a helmet. Unfortunately, due to a backorder, the helmet was not available when he arrived to collect his new motorcycle. However, recognizing the critical importance of wearing a helmet for safety, the two salesmen insisted that he borrow one until his order arrived.
Grimme generously offered, “If they don’t have one for you, I’ve got three of them sitting back here. You can use one of my personal ones. I’d rather you have a helmet on if you’re going to take a ride.” Despite some initial resistance from the customer, he eventually conceded and rode away from the dealership, with his head safeguarded by the borrowed helmet.
Tragically, just minutes after embarking on his journey, the man encountered a crash that catapulted him over the handlebars, directly impacting his head. Fortunately, first responders at the scene reported that his injuries could have been far more severe had he not been wearing a helmet.
Reflecting on the incident, the store’s general manager expressed deep gratitude, stating, “If Dave and Ryan wouldn’t have insisted that this gentleman wear a helmet, it would have been a dire outcome. I firmly believe they saved his life.”

In recognition of their life-saving actions, Degroote and Grimme were recently honored by the city of Eden Prairie. The Chief of Police and Fire Chief personally presented them with Challenge Coins, symbolizing their exceptional courage and selflessness. Tuesday’s ceremony served as an opportunity for the community to express its heartfelt appreciation for these two individuals and the extraordinary difference they made in preserving a fellow citizen’s life.
