Mysterious Ancient Japanese ‘Killing Stone’ Said to Contain an Evil Demon has Cracked Open

This sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie, but some truths are stranger than fiction.

A stone in Japan that recently split is a volcanic rock said to be home to the nine-tailed fox known as Tamamo-No-Mae in mythology. According to legend, those who come into contact with the rock, named Sessho-Seki, will die. It is said to continuously spew out a poisonous gas.

The rock is located in the mountains of Tochigi near Tokyo, and it has become a tourist hot spot over the years due to its sulphureous hot springs.

Recently, the stone has separated into two halves causing many to speculate that the evil demon that lives inside it will be resurrected to wreak havoc across the land.

Legend has it that the demon in the rock once took the form of a beautiful woman and was part of an evil plan to kill Emperor Toba, who ruled Japan between 1107 and 1123. Her true identity was the nine-tailed fox who lives inside the rock.

The splitting of the rock has brought its share of social media comments.

“I thought 2022 couldn’t get worse. Now a furious Japanese spirit is freed from its killing stone,” said one.

“My guess is the demon is going to look around at 2022 and want to go back into the rock for another millennium,” said another.

It is believed the rainwater is what finally split the stone. Reports suggest that this was part of a process that began several years ago.

Experts are currently looking into whether they can restore Sessho-Seki to its original form. Hopefully, they can do so before the demon strikes again!
